Pickin' On the Big Ten: V for Vendetta

Penn State whiteout, 2007Every Thursday, Pickin' On the Big Ten previews the weekend's action, settling the scores before the scores are settled.

Penn State has declared that Saturday night's game with Iowa will be a "whiteout" game. That distinction is usually reserved for games of the utmost importance, and if you don't know why this game is so important to the Nittany Lions, you must not remember what happened last year in Iowa City. A Daniel Murray field goal put the Hawkeyes on top and ended any hopes Penn State had of getting blown out by Florida playing in the BCS National Championship Game. It's time for revenge.

Penn State, however, is not the only Big Ten team with a little revenge on its mind this weekend.

Illinois Player Stabbed in a Bar Fight

The good news is that Martez Wilson is stable and expected to make a full recovery after being stabbed at a bar in Champaign on Thursday night/Friday morning. According to most reports, Wilson was not looking to start trouble or even caused the trouble.
Police said a "verbal altercation" began among a group of men at Fubar. When the victim allegedly went to assist another man who'd been surrounded by a group of men, he was stabbed.
The police are still investigating and they have no suspects in custody. Shockingly enough, the suspects were no longer patronizing the bar when the police arrived.

This is the proverbial cherry on top to a lousy year for Wilson. The sophomore outside linebacker was a top recruit, but has been in-and-out of Illinois coach Ron Zook's doghouse. Briefly demoted from the starting job, and suspended for violating team rules in the final game of the season. Wilson will definitely be eager to ring in the New Year.

Big Ten Preview: Illinois, Wildcard

The Fighting Illini were quite the surprise in college football last season, going 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten a year after finishing 2-10. The quick turnaround in Champaign resulted in the first Rose Bowl berth for the Illini since 1983, and the team celebrated by getting their butts kicked 49-17 by USC.

Still, despite the embarrassment handed them by the Trojans, the 2007 season can't be considered anything less than a raging success at Illinois.

The question is, will the Illini be able to carry that success into the 2008 season? History suggests they won't as they've generally followed every winning season with a losing season in Champaign, but that was before the recruiting machine that is Ron Zook came to town.

So will the Illini continue their climb to becoming a Big Ten powerhouse, or will they return to the back of the pack?

Illini's Speedy Martez Wilson Breaks the Code: Big Ten Is Slow

Just ... just, shush! ...

Illinois? Ok. Ohio State? Ok. Michigan? Ok.

Missouri and USC? Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaast.
"I chose not to redshirt. I told them I'd work hard and get as much playing time as possible. I got a starting spot on special teams as a gunner, and it helped me a lot to adjust to the speed. Some teams were very fast."

Such as the first and last teams the Illini played last season, he said.

"The fastest games I played were Missouri and USC," he said.
Anecdotal and oh so annoying for Big Ten fans everywhere. Those Big Ten gazelles can't outrun those Pac-10, Big- 12 and SEC cheetahs or so the claim goes. Silly stuff really, but SEC folks need fresh talking points and love to harass the Big 10.
