WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci Reflects on Inaugural Season

This summer hardly has been the ideal time to start a women's soccer league. While the recession saps the enthusiasm and income from potential sponsors and fans, a series of high-profile events like the Confederations Cup, World Cup qualifying and the tours of popular European clubs such as Barcelona and Chelsea have commanded most of the spotlight.

But then again, women's soccer didn't exactly thrive when launch conditions were ideal. With the U.S. national team and players like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy at the height of their popularity following the 1999 Women's World Cup and 2000 Olympics, the Women's United Soccer Association nevertheless spent itself into oblivion after just three seasons, failing to attract either the large crowds it expected or consistent television viewership.

For the next four years, former Yahoo! executive (and Foudy's former Stanford teammate) Tonya Antonucci worked quietly but diligently to reestablish the women's pro game in the U.S. The result is Women's Professional Soccer, a modest, seven-team outfit whose playoffs begin Saturday outside Washington, D.C.. Antonucci recently chatted at length with Fanhouse about the ups and downs of the league's first season and its future. The conversation is after the jump:

Abby Wambach Nets 100th International Goal in US Win Over Canada

Abby Wambach 100th goalROCHESTER, N.Y. (July 19) -- Abby Wambach became the ninth women's professional soccer player to record 100 international goals, netting the game-winner in a 1-0 United States' victory over Canada on Sunday.

With the match scoreless in the 79th minute, Wambach took a pass from teammate Lauren Cheney and found the net from nine yards out. The goal -- which came in the same city where legendary U.S. star Mia Hamm scored her 100th marker in 1998 -- came in Wambach's second international game back from a broken leg, an injury that cost her the opportunity to compete at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Nomar Still Loves You Beautiful

Nomar Garciaparra returned to the starting lineup last night, for the first time this season. He was slotted at third base and took the spot of Blake DeWitt, who later pinch ran for the oft-injured No-mah. Garciaparra's return was a little surprising, if only because most people thought he would join the Blue on Friday instead.
The sight of Mr. Mia Hamm's moniker on the card threw all press types for a loop, as word on the street was Friday as a target date. The front office consensus, however, is that Garciaparra won't be any healthier in 48 hours than he is right now, so there's no real harm in tossing him back into the fray.
Nomar went one for two with a pair of walks as the Dodgers throttle-jobbed the Pirates, and his return, especially with Andy LaRoche still on the mend, has to be somewhat comforting to Dodger fans. However, two quick points. First, Nomar is not going to solve the offensive quagmire in the outfield (Andruw Jones is still in a funk and Juan Pierre is still on the roster; it really is more "boggy" than "giggity" in every sense of the situation).

Second, this guy just can't win. Regardless of Mia Hamm and piles of money. We're talking about the face of the Red Sox and their losing ways ... until Theo Epstein shipped him out and they won a championship. And whether or not he has a 2004 championship ring (I think he does), well, it doesn't really matter since that's like catching the garter belt at your ex-wife's wedding reception. In other words, I think expecting a full, healthy and productive season is a bit of a reach.

Bonus Fantasy Spin: Nomar is not a prime option for fantasy owners. However, he can still hit for decent average and a little pop (roughly .290 something and 27 homers over his 800 odd at bats with the Dodgers) so I suppose you could do worse. Not by much, but you could do worse. But if you're stuck with a 3B or 1B option that's not cutting it right now, he's at least worth a look.

City's Best: Los Angeles' Top Five Athletes

FanHouse is posting the top five current athletes for America's top 25 cities with the following criteria: 1) Who would an LA sports fan say is his/her favorite athlete? 2) Would the player's name (or face) be familiar to locals who don't follow sports?

Find your city's top five:
ATL | BOS | CHA | CHI | CIN | CLE | DAL | DC | DEN | DET | HOU | IND | LA | MIA | MIL | MIN | NO | NY | SF | PHI | PHO | PIT | SD | SEA | STL

Los Angeles is truly devoid of stars at the moment. In reality, there is only one player who should make this list, and everyone else should receive honorable mention. Not having a professional football team hurts the LA area, but what star power they lack in the pro game is usually made up for in the collegiate ranks. Presently however, none of the major collegiate programs has a bonafide star, which makes this list harder to do. Plus, there was the question as to whether or not Anaheim teams should be included. Anyways, here's my list of the top five athletes in LA, with thanks to all my friends who provided assistance.

5. Elton Brand: For the past six seasons, EB has been a 20 and 10 player for the Clippers, quietly establishing himself as one of the best forwards in the league. Sure he plays for the secondary basketball team in town, but his on-court hustle and positive attitude has made him a favorite amongst the LA crowd. The recent emergence of the Clippers as a playoff contender has helped raise Brand's profile as well.

4. Vladimir Guerrero: Vlad makes the cut because he's the lone pure slugger out of the two successful teams in what is a huge baseball town. The fact that he doesn't speak much English or do many interviews hurts his marketability, but his studly numbers speak for themselves. Vlad has been a 30/100 guy since the day he signed with the Angels, hitting over .300 each season, and OPSing over .900. Oh yeah, being named AL MVP in his first year with the team sure didn't hurt his popularity either.

Double Play: Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm Have Twins

Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra
On Tuesday, Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm became the proud parents of (I'm guessing) two of the most athletically-gifted newborn babies the world has ever seen:
"Both are healthy and over five pounds," Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said, adding the births took place in the Los Angeles area.

Rawitch said Garciaparra left the team late Tuesday to be with his wife, but was in the air when the babies were born.

"He was on a speaker phone with the delivery room speaking with Mia during the births," Rawitch said.
I guess that whole "no cell phones on airplanes" thing doesn't apply to two-time batting champions. I'm putting the over/under on America's T-ball and youth soccer records being absolutely annihilated at five years ... and I'm taking the under.

In the meantime, for the sake of the babies, I'm hoping Nomar's OCD-like routine before every swing doesn't extend to feeding time, or else these kids might just go hungry.
