Michael Phelps Has to Watch for Pranks Around the US Swim Team

Elie Seckbach, the Embedded Correspondent, brings his exclusive video reporting to FanHouse. Check back regularly for more videos.

The great white shark from Baltimore, Michael Phelps, collects gold medals -- eight at the most recent Olympics, five at the world championships. In fact, he has just become the first swimmer in history to complete 100M butterfly in under 50 seconds (49.82 seconds). You would think that nothing could rattle him, but, as you'll hear from Cullen Jones and Garrett Weber-Gale, when Phelps is around his US Swim team he does not sleep well.

Check out the video after the jump.

A New Sort of Performance Enhancement Muddies the Water

Paul Biedermann
So you think performance-enhancing drugs should be legal? You should have jumped into the pool at the World Swimming Championships.

Chances are you would now be a world record-holder. A veritable Michael Phelps, at least if you'd dressed properly for the occasion.

That's a slight exaggeration, given the average American is now the size of barge. But the meet, which wrapped up Sunday in Rome, provided a real-life glimpse into what sports might become if the Legalize PEDs crowd had its way.

"A laughingstock."

So said five-time Olympic gold medalist Dawn Fraser. The Australian won her medals back when races were won by the best swimmer, not the best swimsuit.

Michael Phelps Closes World Championships With 5th Gold Medal

ROME (AP) -- Michael Phelps had every reason to be satisfied after the Beijing Olympics. Yet he kept insisting there was more to do in the pool.

Clearly.

Even coming off his longest layoff and the embarrassment of being photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe, Phelps turned in another remarkable performance over eight days at the Foro Italico. He completed it Sunday night by helping the U.S. 400-meter medley relay team set the 43rd world record of the fastest meet in history.

Michael Phelps Sets World Record, Beats Rival in 100 Fly

Michael PhelpsROME (AP) -- He defiantly spit out a mouthful of a water, climbed atop the lane rope, pumped his fists furiously and tugged on that supposedly inferior swimsuit.

The message was clear: Don't mess with Michael Phelps.

Milorad Cavic tried to get in his head and wound up looking at his back, losing again to the guy who beat him at the Beijing Olympics.

This time, there was no doubt about it.

``There are always things that fire me up and motivate me,'' Phelps said Saturday, after becoming the first swimmer to break 50 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly. ``That's just how I tick.''

FINA Pushes Bodysuit Ban to Jan. 1

ROME (AP) -- No need to worry about a Michael Phelps boycott.

Swimming's governing body will ban record-breaking bodysuits beginning Jan. 1, a move that comes partly in response to a threat from Phelps' coach to pull his swimmer from competition until the suits are outlawed.

"It's going to be cool come Jan. 1 to be able to have all of us pretty much wearing the same suit," Phelps said Friday after swimming the leadoff leg as the Americans broke the world record in the 800 freestyle relay. "All of this is going to be finished and then we're going to be able to talk about swimming again, not suits."

Phelps Bounces Back to Set World Record

Michael PhelpsROME (AP) -- Michael Phelps had another swimsuit issue.

It didn't slow him down this time.

Phelps bounced back from a stunning loss with something more familiar - a world record in the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday. For good measure, he surpassed another of Mark Spitz's accomplishments with the 34th world record of his career, one more than Spitz had during his brilliant run in the pool.

One night after he was soundly beaten by Germany's Paul Biedermann, Phelps sliced the time in what he calls his "bread and butter'' to 1 minute, 51.51 seconds, more than a half-second lower than his gold medal-winning time of 1:52.03 at the Beijing Olympics.

Arena X-Glide Suit Causes Controversy, Bob Bowman Says 'Sport Is in Shambles'

Arena X-Glide suitROME(AP) -- No bodysuit ban, no Michael Phelps.

That was the essence of what the Olympic great's coach said Tuesday after swimming's governing body confirmed bodysuits will be outlawed next year. The rule will not take effect until April or May, later than expected.

Bob Bowman spoke after Phelps lost a major race for the first time since 2005. He was beaten by a relative unknown wearing a suit that will be barred next year. Bowman said FINA should have banned bodysuits before these world championships because the value of world records was diminishing.

Phelps Stunned at World Championships

Michael PhelpsROME (AP) -- Michael Phelps sure looked out of place.

After bending over to accept a medal he wanted no part of, then listening to another swimmer's national anthem, Phelps tried to make his getaway. Not so fast - there were still pictures to take.

So he straggled back to the top step of the awards stand, the place he knows so well. This time, it was already occupied. Phelps stood off to the side while Paul Biederman was the center of attention and photographers snapped away.

Michael Phelps Off to Winning Start

ROME (AP) -- Michael Phelps and the Americans got the best of France again in the relay. And just like Beijing, the world's greatest swimmer owed a big hand to his teammates Sunday.

Phelps led off the 400-meter freestyle relay, his first event of the world swimming championships, but he was only third when he turned it over to Ryan Lochte.

Lochte hung tough against France's hulking Alain Bernard while surprising Russia also surged into contention. Matt Grevers did his part on the third leg, and Nathan Adrian pulled it out for the U.S. with a blistering down and back, overtaking the Russians and holding off the heavily favored French to win in 3 minutes, 9.21 seconds.

Phelps Wins 400 Free at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Michael Phelps held off a late charge by his rivals to win the 400-meter freestyle Saturday at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix.

Phelps cruised to an early lead, but he had to dig in over the final 100 meters to win in 3 minutes, 48.05 seconds under sunny, windy conditions at the outdoor pool.
