Summer Scramble: NFC West Burning Questions and Prediction

Larry Fitzgerald
It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL, and it's driving you nuts. You need a fix. A hit. Anything NFL to pull you through the dog days. FanHouse is here to help with an in-depth look at each division that should have you plenty prepared for training camp. We're calling it Summer Scramble, and this afternoon we look at some Burning Questions in the NFC West and offer a ridiculously early prediction.

Got Any Good Fantasy Draft Stories?

Even in the internet age of fantasy sports, I still think many players only partake in the games against groups of friends. Many of these leagues have live drafts in person, and the stories that come from these drafts are always great -- especially when alcohol is prominently involved. In fact, if you play fantasy sports and you don't have at least one of these a year, you are really missing out.

Anyway, we here at FanHouse -- being the house of true sports fans, after all -- decided to give fantasy sports fans an avenue to tell their favorite draft day stories. It can involve mocking a friend, someone making a fool of him or herself, or just a really bad pick. Here are a few to get the chain started.

The Arizona Cardinals

Steve Breaston - Breaston practiced lightly this week with a knee injury, but is expected to play on Sunday.

The Atlanta Falcons

Michael Turner - Turner was seen with his ankle in a bucket of ice (owww)after Sunday's game, but he says it is not serious and will be ready.

The Chicago Bears

Devin Hester - Hester has some torn cartilage in his ribs and has not practiced this week. I doubt if anybody starts Hester, but if so look elsewhere as he probably will not play.

The Baltimore Ravens

Todd Heap - Heap left the game last week after coming in as Probable. Now listed as questionable, he is not looking like a great start either way.

Willis McGahee - Looks like Willis should be ready to kick off his 2008 season this week against the Texans. He seems to be improving, but not 100% quite yet though, so keep a close eye on him. After all, he was expected to go last week. The Hurricane Ike related move to Monday night helps McGahee owner's chances.

The Buffalo Bills

The Bills do not have any material injuries to watch, but it bears mentioning that their best lineman, Jason Peters, finally ended his contract holdout and is ready to go this week. Marshawn Lynch owners everywhere are currently doing the worm.

How will the Jacksonvile offensive be affected by the loss of both starting offensive guards? Is the running force with Freddie and MJD gonna be slowed down?
- Michael Gus, Kissimmee, FL

It, um, doesn't really look good now that Vince Manuwai and Maurice Williams have both been placed on the IR. I really like Fred Taylor, and was glad to see him get the recognition he's deserved last year, but he is 32, and he and Maurice Jones-Drew really struggled against a physical Titans team. Which is a troublesome sign, as the Jaguars have built an identity on being a physical team on both sides of the ball. But if you take away that dimension to their offense, things don't look very good, especially if Jerry Porter's bum hammy keeps rearing its ugly head. Do you really trust David Garrard to carry a team for an entire season if the Jaguars can't get their run game figured out? I certainly don't. And the Jags face some physical defenses this year in Buffalo, Tennessee again, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Chicago, Green Bay, and Baltimore.

Week One Value Machine: Fast Willie Will Not Go Quietly Into the Night

Value machine takes a look at the rising and falling fantasy stock of players in light of their recent performance. If you don't see a big mover covered, he's probably already been hit in Reality Check.

Top Riser: Willie Parker
Rashard Mendenhall was thought to be the short yardage back and steal carries that fell between the tackles. Of course, Fast Willie took nearly all the carries until trash-time, when Mendenhall garnered the majority of his ten. Parker scored three times, including twice from inside the ten. You have to assume that was a statement game by Parker that he's not going away, and the Steelers obviously believe he can handle the inside-the-tackles and short-yardage work. Parker's the starter, and Mendenhall is the backup. It's just that simple.

Eddie Royal
Brandon Marshall returns this week, but Royal was all over the place Monday night. The nine catches for 146 yards were huge, but the two carries also spoke volumes. It's obvious the Broncos want the football in his hands.

Matt Forte
He displayed the quick feet and great vision Sunday night in Indy. The Bears will lean heavily on ball control offense, and that means Forte is never going to be short on touches.

Holmgren's Nightmare Train Continues: Nate Burleson Now Out for the Season

The one bright offensive spot for the Seattle Seahawks during Sunday's beatdown at the hands of the Bills was Nate Burleson. And how could he not be? After his star rose briefly in the absence of Randy Moss in Minnesota, he fell just as quickly, becoming a great punt returner (not a compliment) in Seattle. But this year ... this year was different. After all, with Bobby Engram and Deion Branch both out, Nate was set to become Matt Hasselbeck's next great target.

Until he got hurt for the entire season.
... Burleson suffered a torn knee ligament in the third quarter of Sunday's loss in Buffalo, and will undergo season-ending surgery. Burleson caught five passes before leaving, including a touchdown. He led the team in scoring receptions last season with nine.
This is the very definition of a devastating blow to a Seahawk team that was struggling already to find an identity and straight up reeling after the loss to Buffalo. This now also makes Courtney Taylor the number one wide receiver on Seattle's roster.

And it also guarantees that Branch, who may or may not have any business coming back seven months after ACL surgery, will be playing in Week 2. It's Holmgren's last season and this is a team that had serious Super Bowl aspirations with a stout defense and a revamped running game, so seeing Branch continue to sit would be surprising.

Fantasy Spin: Drop Burleson, obviously. And I'd go grab Branch, because honestly, I think he'll be back next week. Taylor is a pretty nice add at this point too, because someone's gotta catch the passes.
