Damage Control: Eli Has Plantar Fasciitis

Eli ManningDid the injury bug hit your fantasy football team like it was a car windshield moving at 100 MPH? If so, it may be time to do some Damage Control.

Quarterback

Eli Manning, Giants - Manning was diagnosed with inflamed tissue in his right foot following an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. The Giants' team physician has cleared him to play this weekend against Oakland if he can tolerate the pain.

Matthew Stafford, Lions - Stafford was forced to leave the game early on Sunday with a knee injury. It turns out the kneecap popped out of joint and then right back in. He's going to be reevaluated this week.

Larry English Gets Stuck With Gigantic Dinner Bill Courtesy of New Teammates

Larry EnglishLarry English is expected to be the next great linebacking force for the San Diego Chargers. But, like any rookie, he has to deal with certain ribbing and hazing along the way. For some NFL teams, the tradition includes making the rook treat everyone to a meal fit for gridiron giants.

In Larry English's scenario, the final dinner tab was pretty eye-popping.

Shawne Merriman Pumped About Larry English, Says 'Let's Bring the Heat'

On Saturday, around 6:30 PM ET, commissioner Roger Goodell made his way to the podium at Radio City Music Hall and announced that, with the 16th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers had selected Larry English, defensive end, out of Northern Illinios.

The pick was immediately met with skepticism; in the weeks leading up to the biggest offseason event on the NFL calendar, most mock drafts had the Chargers taking a running back. Georgia's Knowshon Moreno would have been an obvious choice, but the Broncos' impetuousness took him off the board at No. 12. Which meant that San Diego would have to settle on the second-best back on their board (assuming Moreno was first), or, perhaps, they had every intention of bolstering the defense all along.

Behind Enemy Lines: Talking Wild Card With a Chargers Blogger

As we get ready for the Wildcard Weekend matchup of the Chargers and Colts, Loren Casuto from Bolt Talk was nice enough to offer some insights on the Chargers for this week's Behind Enemy Lines feature.

Sportz Assassin: How do both of you feel about how the Chargers are playing heading into the playoffs?

Loren Casuto:
It's a minor miracle, no team has ever come back from 4-8 to make the playoffs. The Chargers showed an incredible amount of heart and grit to play as hard and well as they did when everyone, even some Charger fans, wrote them off for dead. I'm thrilled because this is what we were expecting at the start of the season and now the real work for the Chargers can begin.

Sportz: San Diego and Indianapolis have had some great battles in recent years. What, if anything, from those games will help decide this playoff game?

San Diego Fires Force Chargers to Evacuate

Four years and one day after the Chargers were forced to evacuate San Diego and play a regular season home game in Arizona, the Chargers were once again forced to cancel practice and are considering moving practice to Arizona because of fires in the San Diego area. The fires in the area are not near the team's Murphy Canyon complex, but they are nearby many of the player's homes.
"There's nothing we could do today," head coach Norv Turner said. "We have a dozen guys who have evacuated their houses and have stuff they've got to deal with."

Among those who live in the Poway and Rancho Bernardo area are LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips and Luis Castillo.

According to the AP story, Trevor Hoffman was among a handful of Padres personnel who had to evacuate the area as well, and the home of former Padres manager, Bruce Bochy, may also be in danger. ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Chargers will in fact move practice to Arizona, but they are currently uncertain whether or not they will move their scheduled home game on Sunday against the Texans.

UPDATE:
I'm told 250,000 people have been evacuated and that 3/4 of San Diego is being evacuated. Qualcomm Stadium, which is where the Chargers player their home games, is currently serving as an evacuation center.

Ted Cottrell Misspoke When He Said He Fixed the Chargers' Defense

As a disgruntled Chargers fan, it's easy to just point to Norvell and say, "yep, there's your problem, right there." I'm not saying that that's wrong, it glosses over the details of why, exactly, San Diego is such a train wreck a season after winning 14 games.

In today's San Diego Union-Tribune, Kevin Acee takes a look at the details of the teams' 1-3 start. Specifically, is defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell mismanaging the play-calling?

After getting embarrassed by the Patriots on national television, Cottrell declared the defense fixed. Well, maybe it looked that way during that week, but the same problems surfaced on subsequent Sundays.

Anyway, linebackers Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman have seen their sack totals decrease this year, and Acee wonders if Cottrell's play-calling has something to do with it:
"It's aggressive," Cottrell said of his scheme. When evidence to the contrary was mentioned, Cottrell said, "Well, whatever. I'm not going to argue with you. But I'm not sitting back and playing frickin' coverage – don't tell me I'm not going after people."
Awesome. Whatever you do, don't question whether Cottrell is going after people. Duly noted, sir. You may have heard this before, but there were some concerns about hiring Norv Turner. For starters, Norv's not a very good head coach. Second, San Diego had two solid in-house candidates: offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and defensive coordinator Wade Philliips.

Cameron's in Miami and Phillips landed the Dallas job. And he's doing for the Cowboys' 3-4 what Bill Parcells (and Cottrell in San Diego, apparently) couldn't: playing aggressively. So while it's easy to just blame Norv for everything, Cottrell is also deserving of some ridicule. Whether he thinks so or not.

Chargers Do Something Right; Lock Up Shaun Phillips

Because they damn well deserve it, here's some good news for Chargers fans: the team has locked up linebacker Shaun Phillips with a long-term deal. Financial details weren't disclosed, but the contract runs through 2012.

Chargers GM AJ Smith's made his share of missteps (like hiring Norv Turner), but credit him for the ability to lock up his good young players with deals like this. The team's proactive strategy on these things ensure that there will be quality players around for years to come for Norv Turner to waste.

Phillips stepped into the hole opened up when Steve Foley had a few holes opened up in him, and Phillips was absolutely fantastic in that role this year. His 11.5 sacks were ninth in the NFL ... not bad for a guy in his first year as a starter.
