10 Quarterback Battles Worth Watching

Matt Stafford and Daunte CulpepperWe're entering a dark period of the NFL life right now. Nothing is going on. Players and coaches are on vacation. With that we look at 10 quarterback situations worth looking at before training camps start in late July, because, well, it's always about the quarterback.

1. Detroit. Matthew Stafford vs. Daunte Culpepper.

The situation: It's the same old argument. Do you start the rookie or the veteran? The No. 1 pick of the draft is Stafford, but the vet with a chance to win a few games is Culpepper. Stafford is the future but you don't want to damage it. For every Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco there's a Ryan Leaf and Vince Young.

Solution: Start Culpepper and wait until 2010 for Stafford.

Calvin Pace, Another NFL Drug Cheat -- Where's the Outrage?

Jets linebacker Calvin Pace is suspended for performance-enhancing drug use. Why isn't this a bigger deal? Not to pick on poor Calvin Pace, who claims today to be the latest NFL victim of those sneaky, nefarious over-the-counter supplements, but come on here, people. At what point is it fair to start calling out the NFL on the performance-enhancing drug issue? This guy's no superstar, but he's an important player on a New York team. The baseball equivalent would be somebody like Ryan Church on the Mets or Hideki Matsui on the Yankees. Imagine if one of those guys had been suspended today for steroids? Would ESPN even think about leading SportsCenter with anything else?

Rex Ryan Reveals He Has Dyslexia

Rex RyanNEW YORK (AP) - Words have always been Rex Ryan's biggest challenge.

Not so much saying them, of course. The New York Jets' loquacious rookie coach has no trouble speaking his mind. Reading and writing, though, have made Ryan cringe since grade school.

That's the effect dyslexia can have, even on the most confident of NFL coaches.

"It was really frustrating," Ryan told The Associated Press. "So much of school, you have to write, but I just struggled. I couldn't help it."

Jets Interested in Plaxico Burress, Unsure Of His Legal, League Status

Plaxico Burress might be able to find a new NFL team without having to find a new home -- and without having to hop on a plane for his next court date -- as New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has confirmed interest in the former New York Giants receiver.

Bill Belichick Now Has an Excuse to Run Up Score on Jets

Bill Belichick is a lot of things, both real and imagined, but he rarely uses the media to take shots at opponents. Yes, he went off on Freddie Mitchell, but I'm not even sure that counts. Mitchell was flapping his gums about the Patriots prior to Super Bowl XXXIX and it prompted this response from Belichick: "All he does is talk. He's terrible, and you can print that. I was happy when he was in the game."

I mention that encounter because despite Belichick's sometimes tumultuous relationship with the New York Jets -- he resigned a half-hour after accepting the gig in 1999, and didn't appear to be particularly fond of former assistant Eric Mangini once he took the job in 2006 (This probably didn't help; on the upside, Bill and Herm never had any problems, and there's video evidence as proof. [Waves at camera, mouths "hello," laughs hysterically.]) -- he has yet to go "FredEx" on anybody associated with the team.

Jets Reach Agreement With First-Round Pick Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez and the Jets have agreed on a contractFLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets announced Wednesday afternoon that they have reached agreement on the terms of a contract with quarterback Mark Sanchez, their first-round pick from this year's draft.

The Jets did not release terms of the contract, but a person close to the situation confirmed to FanHouse that it's a five-year deal that includes about $28 million in guaranteed money and could be worth as much as $60 million total if Sanchez meets all of his incentives.

Sanchez's contract isn't close to the $41.7 million guaranteed that the No. 1 overall pick, former Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, got from the Lions. Nor does it match the $34.75 million guaranteed that last year's No. 3 overall pick, former Boston College QB Matt Ryan, got from the Falcons. But the deal for Sanchez (who was No. 5 overall this year) is sure to renew calls from the NFL and its owners for a rookie wage scale.

Mark Sanchez Practices (Screaming) In Front of a Mirror

Rookie QB Mark Sanchez is working on making his voice louder in an effort to win the starting job with the Jets.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There are so many things a rookie quarterback -- even one as hyped as Mark Sanchez -- can do better. He can be more accurate, less nervous, a quicker learner...any number of things.

Sanchez's coach wants him to be louder.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that one of the things Sanchez needs to work on in his preseason competition with Kellen Clemens for the team's starting quarterback job is his voice -- specifically the way in which he uses it to try and draw defenses offsides. Sanchez said today he was getting the message, and getting better.

Do Rex Ryan and Channing Crowder Need to Get a Room?

Jets coach Rex Ryan is spicing up the off-season with a verbal sparring match with Dolphins LB Channing Crowder.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Look, the NFL offseason is freaking boring. I know, I know, if you're reading this, you're a die-hard and you can't get enough NFL news, even in June. But the fact is there's little-to-nothing going on this time of year. Which is why you've got to love Jets coach Rex Ryan and Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder for spicing things up the way they have the past couple of days.

Ryan and Crowder have been hooked up in a little war of words for the past week. And their dispute, rooted in Ryan's tough talk about not being intimidated by anybody else in the AFC East and Crowder's hurt feelings on behalf of a division-champion team that he feels isn't being given enough credit for its 2008 accomplishment, continued today.

Jets' Leon Washington Hints at Training Camp Holdout

Jets RB Leon Washington is practicing with the team, but how long will he hang around if he doesn't get a new contract? He missed some of the team's voluntary OTA workouts, but Jets running back Leon Washington is in New Jersey for mandatory minicamp even though he's still looking for a contract extension. Washington spoke to reporters in Florham Park on Tuesday and hinted that he might hold out of training camp next month if no deal is reached before then.

"No decision for training camp," Washington said, according to a transcript of his interview provided by the Jets' media relations department. "I will wait until that time comes around and we will see how everything goes. I have to talk to my agent and the Jets but there is no decision yet. I think it's important for me to be at training camp, and hopefully I can be there."
